Approaching Castle

It was a rainy day when we went to visit the Kasteel de Haar and somehow that seemed appropriate for a castle trip. This castle turned out to be everything you'd imagine from fairy tales. The first references of it date back to 1391, but it had become a ruin over the years and was entirely restored in the late 1800's. Even the church and the village became involved in this project which included not only the architecture but the gardens and interior as well. The original interior of the residence was never registered so they used what was remining of the ruins to get an idea what it would have been like.

The photos above show the castle in ruins before the restoration. They did have a floor plan from the 1500's which showed the castle to have the main floor in a pentagon shape after it was destroyed in 1482 as a result of quarrels between the bishop and the city of Utrecht which is near to the location of the castle.

Note: We were not permitted to take photos of the interior so the ones you will see on these pages were scanned and changed to protect any existing copyrights. This also applies to the photos of the ruins.
