Observances of
an American Transplanted in Holland -
First Few Weeks

Shopping:

So far, we've been to a lot of shops in and around Amersfoort (on foot and by car). Even shopping is different. Haven't figured out what size clothes I wear yet. To get the coat the first day, I just kept trying them on till one fit. Size was something like 42. In the US, I'd probably wear a size 10. Go figure.

And the shoes I bought said size 39! but the shopkeeper said 5 1/2. States size is 8. Go figure!

Looked extensively for a dresser for the bedroom. Not in abundance here. The bedroom displays all have a large cupboard sort-of that has shelves/drawers somewhere and a place to hang some clothes. Hein had a small one of those here, but not enough space for clothes for two people. Found a nice one in one furniture store that we probably aren't allowed in again. You see, the top opening appeared to be a panel that tilted down, so naturally I tried to tilt it down, wereupon the whole drawer (it was a drawer!) went crashing to the floor with the front remaining part dangling from the guilty party's hand!

On to the next store where we looked at kitchen things. Have you ever heard a stainless steel tea pot hitting the tile floor from of height of 5.5 feet! Could wake up the dead! We decided to try demolishing, (correction - shopping) on a different side of town the next day. Finally did find a dresser. Well it's actually a shelving unit that you can buy drawers for to make it into a dresser. Works great, even with the broken drawer. Yes, I did it again while assembing it. Did you have to ask?
