Dutch BakingDid I say there is a lot to learn for an American in Holland? Picture this - an Apple Crumble Tart Mix, a knowledge of English, Fahrenheit and cups/ounces/teaspoons instead of Dutch, Centigrade and Liters/Kilograms, and we're going to bake that pie/tart. Now the oven is a combination microwave/convection and you've never used a convection oven, but you know you can't use metal in a microwave - but you can in this one when the convection is set to on but you decide to use glass to be safe. The first thing you do is get out your ingredients, right? Wrong! The first thing is to get out your Dutch/English translation dictionary. The following is the translation of the instructions on the box. The blue is the English translation of the (red) Dutch. Every one of these words, except the ones in black had to be looked up, and let me tell you sometimes I had to sift through the meanings to find one that made sense in a recipe. For instance, one of the words had a meaning of "grout", like what you do with tile, so I naturally knew that wasn't the word I wanted. Of course, some of the words are pretty close in meaning, but you can never be too sure. Have fun and Happy Baking. Apple Crumble Tart recipe
Put (doe) the dry/compact (gedroogde) appelfilling in a bowl (kom) and pour (giet) water on (erop). Mix/stir (roer) the mixture (mengsel) through one another (door elkaar) and put aside (en zet apart,) leave it to cool. (laat het afkoelen.) Put the dough mix (deegmix) in a bowl (kom). Join (combine?) (voeg) the egg (ei) and the not too soft (niet te zacht) butter (boter) or (of) margarine too. (toe). Beat (Klop) with the mixer (met de mixer) on the middle position (op the middleste stand) for 2 minute (in ca. 1 min) till dough is crumbly (tot en kruimeldeeg). Put 2/3 of the dough (Doe 2/3 van het deeg) in the greased (ingevette) springform pan (springvorm), press lightly (druk het licht aan). Distribute (Verdeel) cooled (afgekoelde) appelfilling over (erover); leave 1 cm of the rim free. (ong. 1 cm van de rand vrijlaten). Cover (Bedek) the filling (het vulling) with the rest of the crumble dough. (met de rest van het krumeldeeg). Baking Temp:
(Baktemperatuur:) 1.Set the form (Zet de vorm) it's under/beneath (iets onder) the middle in the oven (het midden in de oven). 2.Estrange/remove (Verwijder) directly/at once (direct) from baking (na het bakken). the rim of the spring form (de rand van de springvorm) after 10 min. (na 10 min.) the bottom (de bodem) 3.Let the tart on (Laat de taart op) a cake rack (een taartrooster) further cooling (verder afkoelen). As you can imagine, it took much longer to translate the recipe than to bake the pie, but it was worth it - these pies are great!
