The hotel where we stayed
was an old, established Bed & Breakfast and was quite comfortable
and modern. It was "typically" English with flowered wallpaper
and bedspreads (not the same), lace curtains and nicely decorated.
And, yes, I am ashamed of myself for not getting any pictures. It
even had a lovely garden and terrace where in good weather it would
be an enjoyable place for tea.
It was owned and run by three
sisters and their mother, each with different personalities. For
those of you who have ever watched "Faulty Towers" on
TV, I will say that it was somewhat reminiscent of that only not
as big and better organized. The dining area was almost identical
to Faulty Towers, though. They had no one to help with luggage,
however, and our room - naturally - was on the top floor. Nope,
no elevators, just flights of stairs.
Also, the answer to a question
seemed to depend on who you asked.

Case in point: Since
I smoke, I have a habit of looking for ashtrays or "no
smoking" signs when I enter a place and I distinctly
remember ashtrays in the lobby and a "No Smoking"
sign at the entrance to the dining room. So I didn't smoke
at breakfast the first morning. That evening we asked for
another nice place close for dinner. The girl at the desk
said "Why not here?". I responded that I'd like
someplace where I could smoke. She said, "You can smoke
anywhere here - just ask for an ashtray." (I could no
longer see the sign I know I had seen the day before. So we
ate there, and I smoked.
The next morning after
breakfast I again asked for an ashtray. A different sister
this time said, "I'm sorry, we don't allow smoking in
the dining room." Go figure! No matter, the hotel and
food were great, shower was hot, people were friendly - what
more could you ask? I'd definitely recommend it and advise
taking pictures.
