Now we're off to Windermere!
Windermere is a lovely
little town up in the Northern part of England called the "Lake
District". This area has rolling green hills with miles of
meadows for sheep, goats, cattle and horses. If you just want to
relax and leave the hustle and bustle of big cities behind, this
is the place to go. Once you leave the freeways and highways you
encounter the narrow country roads - some wide enough for one car
only.
We were staying with friends,
Eunice and Glynn, in their home at The Crosses near Windermere which
was about 3 hours from York. The last part of the trip there, probably
about 1/2 mile is up a winding road with walls built of stone on
each side. This is one of those one-car-wide roads, so if you meet
someone partway, one car has to back up. I noticed only one area
where there was a place to back into so that the other car could
pass. Apparently, who backs up is determined by which one has the
least distance to reverse. I don't think that's always the case
in the winter, though, when the road is covered with ice and snow
which is a situation I don't intend to discover first hand.

These are photos of their home
at The Crosses. The house is around 300 years old but has been remodeled
several times. It is a large, lovely home and the room that Hein
and I stayed in was in a section that was the last to be added to
the home. They have beautiful flower gardens, a vegetable garden
and a large back garden where we found is a perfect place to sit,
relax and enjoy the view of the countryside.
Eunice and Glynn were
our witnesses and we stayed with them from Saturday till Tuesday,
the day of the wedding. She went out of her way to make us welcome,
cooking our meals, taking me shopping, letting me chat, and even
packed a terrific picnic lunch for us one day when we went on a
trip around the countryside and one of the lakes.
